In observance of the approaching 200th birthday of our town in 2003, the Mont Vernon Bicentennial Committee has been formed and a core committee has already met several times to begin planning a year-long celebration. Spearheaded by Zoe Fimbel, the committee's goal is "to set up through community involvement and participation a fun, enjoyable, and educational celebration of our community's first 200 years." The Board of Selectmen has expressed support and enthusiasm for this endeavor, and research into historical perspective, scheduling, and costs is underway.
Some features being considered will be a sledding party; a cabin fever dance; a ham and bean supper before Town Meeting; town walkabouts; the creation of a community bicentennial stone wall; Purgatory Falls Day; historical reenactments; Old Home Days with a parade in August; and Lamson Farm weekend. All events will culminate on the official bicentennial anniversary date, December 15, 2003, with a giant birthday cake and fireworks.
Fund raising is underway to help defray the costs involved in this undertaking. Our town tapestry has been a very successful financial kickoff, and several subcommittees are presently working on fund raising projects. We are also accepting donations which are tax deductible. Checks should be made out to the Mont Vernon Bicentennial Committee. At this year's Town Meeting we requested and received the support of the townspeople for a Warrant Article to raise and appropriate the sum of $15,000.00, for the purpose of this celebration. This is a three-year non-lapsing account.
The Bicentennial Committee is meeting on the third Tuesday of each month at 7 P.M. at the Fire Station. We enthusiastically encourage and welcome the participation of all townspeople to help us present a memorable and meaningful observance.
