Luke 22
Original Sources: First Users and First Functions Paul in ~54 (1Cor 11:23): “For I got from the lord (from the sky), what I also gave you: that the lord Jesus on the night in which he was turned in took bread and having given thanks he broke it and said: This is my body which is for you. Do this in my memory. Likewise also the cup after dining saying, This cup is the new covenant in my blood; Do this, whenever you drink, in my memory. For whenever you eat this bread and drink the cup, you announce the death of the lord until he comes.” Function: “Do this whenever you drink:” “this” is the raising of the glass, and this saying is the source of all toasts with glasses raised. Luke alone preserves Paul’s revelation. See Mt 26:26s for Justin’s version. Tertullian says this figure of body-bread fulfils Jer 11:19 LXX, “let us throw wood into his bread,” and Isa 63:1; Gen 49:11 for wine as the symbol for blood. Further (AM 5,8) he says it proves vs. Marcion that Christ was no phantom, or a mere symbol (!). |
